A few months ago on a rainy summer night, my friend Andreas, who recently relocated cross country to Cali, told me he was bringing back (and loving) the open button down graphic shirt. Bringing back? Loving? Open button down graphic shirt? Yes, you read correct, and are probably having the same reaction I had at the time, confusion and horror!
For those of us who skipped the graphic button down trend the first (Tommy Bahama), and second time (Affliction), it’s kind of hard to imagine anyone wearing such an atrocity out in public, let alone bearing their chest in the process. Unless of course that person is Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet (pictured above)! Which, by the way, stands in fashion history as the only chic button down graphic shirt on record.
Well, at least that was the case, until Ms. Stella McCartney unveiled her 2012 Resort collection, which just so happens to contain in it, a very Romeo looking graphic button down shirt. The collection which is 2 parts California Dreamin’, 1 part Miami Vice, and a splash of tequila sunrise is the very printed, overtly modern, & brightly colored CB2 to McCartney’s regularly luxurious, voluminous, & monochromatic, Crate & Barrel.
And much to my surprise, I have to say, I don’t hate it!!! I may even join the top down convertible, i mean band wagon, and give it a try this spring!
